Our Lady of Ascension Church
The Onze Lieve Vrouwe Hemelvaartkerk, located on Krugerlaan in Gouda, is undergoing a transformation that honours the past and responds to the needs of the future. Built in 1980 and originally designed as a Roman Catholic church, the building lost its religious function in 2021. This marked the beginning of a search for a new use that is both sustainable and socially relevant.
The transformation plan, developed within the framework of the Gouda Churches Vision, focuses on preserving the shell of the building. This choice reflects a commitment to circularity and reducing construction waste, while the distinctive architecture enhances an important urban intersection in the neighbourhood. The project includes the addition of an extra storey, creating space for 16 flats. This mix of housing will contribute to a diverse and inclusive community.
The redevelopment goes beyond housing: space has been set aside for a meeting place, which will be filled in in consultation with the municipality. Although the focus is not exclusively on the elderly, the plan contributes to neighbourhood cohesion by facilitating social interaction.
At Kokon, we believe in creating future-proof solutions that bring together history and modernity. The transformation of the OLV Ascension Church is an example of how architecture can contribute to a dynamic and inclusive urban environment, with respect for the past and an eye for the people of today.
